Humble Servant, He Cried, Joy

Here we are, the end of Lent and the beginning of Holy Week.
On Holy Thursday, Father Paolo will wash twelve parishioners’ feet. Why?
So, during supper, fully aware that the Father had put everything into his power and that he had come from God and was returning to God, he rose from supper and took off his outer garments. He took a towel and tied it around his waist. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and dry them with the towel around his waist. John 13:2b-5
Jesus taught us exactly how He wants us to care for each other. We are called to be humble servants. Can you imagine what it would be like for Jesus to wash your feet? What would it be like for you to wash His feet?
On Good Friday we venerate or honor the wood of the cross. Why?
In the days when Christ was in the flesh, he offered prayers and supplications with loud cries and tears to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence. Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered… Hebrews 5:7-8
Jesus was fully human, like you and me, as well as fully divine. Imagine the terrible anxiety and anguish you would feel knowing how you were going to suffer and die on a cross. He cried, overwhelmed with what was coming. God heard Him. Jesus persevered through, sacrificing Himself for you and me, so that our sins were forgiven and Heaven was opened for us.
At the Easter Vigil we are filled with joy. Why?
Then the angel said to the women in reply, “Do not be afraid! I know that you are seeking Jesus the crucified. He is not here, for he has been raised just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples, ‘He has been raised from the dead… Matthew 28: 5-7a
As the angel said, Jesus has risen from the dead! We need to look for Him in our own lives. He brings a joy that nothing can hurt. Then, as the angel said, we need to go and tell others about how Jesus has blessed us in our own lives. Let’s share the joy!
Holy Thursday, Good Friday, the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday, and Easter Sunday each have such beautiful liturgies. I hope you bring your family to them and journey with Jesus. Go to our parish website at www.saintpeterclaver.org to find information on them.
Holy Week blessings!
