As I sat in the waiting area before a doctor’s appointment this past Monday, I watched as a child of about 3 years old keep trying to get his mother’s attention.

He had something to show her.

Mom was on her cell phone, not looking at her child at all.

The little one kept hitting her legs, then he climbed up on the chair next to her and began hitting her arm.

Over and over, he called out to her, “Mommy,” getting louder each time.

Nothing.

He crawled onto her lap and up between her face and her cell phone and yelled, “Mommy!”

(I’m giggling again thinking about it.)

This coming Sunday’s Gospel reading made me think of that little boy.

He was persistent, even creative in getting his mommy’s attention.

A woman who was not Jewish kept calling out to Jesus, asking Him to heal her daughter – called out to Jesus with faith that He could heal her daughter.

The disciples seem annoyed by her and ask Jesus to send her away.

He basically tells her that He is there for the Jewish people, sending her away.

The woman doesn’t stop.

The Gospel says that she did Jesus homage and asked again for His help.

She believed in Him and was persistent, like that little guy wanting to show his mommy something.

Then Jesus said to her in reply, "O woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish." And the woman's daughter was healed from that hour.

Matthew 15:28

Let us have faith in Jesus’ care for us and be persistent in calling out to Him.
