I saw something beautiful yesterday, and maybe some of you did too.

At 10 a.m. Mass two gentlemen experienced what is called in the OCIA process the Rite of Welcome.

They are two adults growing in faith and preparing to celebrate the Sacraments of Holy Communion and Confirmation.

At the beginning of the Rite, Gary, one of their Catechists, read a short introduction of each of them, sharing a bit of their stories in desiring to grow in the Catholic faith and celebrate their Sacraments.

The two gentlemen stood there in front of all of us as their intro was read.

What beautiful humility.

Can you imagine what it would be like if you stood before everyone at a Mass as an introduction that shared a bit of your story was read?

After their Rite, Father Matthew invited all of us to show our support by giving them a round of applause.

As I clapped for them, I watched as they hugged Gary, their sponsors and each other.

Have in you the same attitude that is also in Christ Jesus. Philippians 2:5

I was moved to witness Jesus inviting people to come to know Him through the words of those two gentlemen’s stories.

I was moved to witness Jesus’ loving welcome through them hugging each other after their Rite.

I was moved to witness Jesus’ loving support through the loud applause all in the church gave them.

As Saint Paul says in the Scripture quote above from this coming Sunday’s Second Reading, let’s all strive to have the same attitude of welcome, love and care that Jesus has.
