How Would You Describe Jesus Christ, the King?

What images and words come to your mind when you read or hear the word, King?
The first things that come to my mind are conquerors, powerful, commanding, and wealthy.
I imagine what I’ve seen on the news throughout my life on the British monarchy.
Also what I’ve seen in different movies about kings come to mind – one of my favorites being The Gladiator. That king was a conqueror, powerful, commanding, and wealthy, but also had a deep sadness knowing his son’s heart was bad.
What did all the power and wealth matter?
This weekend at Mass we celebrate the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe.
What images and words come to your mind when you read or hear the words Jesus Christ the King?
I think, He’s the Son of God. But the rest of the words that come are different.
Gentle.
Caring.
Healing.
Teacher of God’s love and mercy.
Humble servant.
Miraculous.
Poor and unhoused.
Forgiving.
Merciful.
Loving, especially of all who our societies typically define as “in the margins”.
Peaceful.
Our redeemer.
Jesus brought what a true king is – one who wants nothing but the very best for their people.
For in him all the fullness was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile all things for him, making peace by the blood of his cross through him, whether those on earth or those in heaven. Colossians 1:19-20
In this weekend’s Second Mass Reading, Saint Paul writes beautifully about our King, Jesus Christ.
The verse above reminds us that in Jesus the fullness of God’s love and redemption flows to all the people of the world, reconciling us back to God and each other.
It also reminds us that through Jesus sacrificing Himself on the cross, our eternal home in Heaven with God was made possible.
We have an amazing King!
Long live Jesus Christ our King!
¡Viva Christo Rey!
