All Saints Day is this Saturday and All Souls Day is this Sunday.

And what is Friday?

Halloween!

The word Halloween is a combination of two words, “hallow” which means “saint” or “holy person” and “een,” which means evening.

So, Halloween is the eve of the holy day of All Saints Day.

As we have fun carving pumpkins and wearing costumes, let’s see if we can make connections to the holy day ahead.

Saints are our Catholic heroes. They have amazing life stories that can inspire us to want to be like them.

Pumpkins are filled with gooey stuff we scoop out, kind of like how Jesus “scoops out” the “gooey stuff” in us called sin.

We carve our pumpkins to then what? Put a candle in to shine light. Our saints shined the light of Christ in their lives. We try to do the same.

The souls of the just are in the hand of God, and no torment shall touch them. Wisdom 3:1

Dia De Los Muertos is celebrated on both days, and even weeks into November as we remember our loved ones who have died.

Some Dia De Los Muertos traditions are to create an altar called an ofrenda which includes pictures of loved ones who have died, foods and drinks they liked, candles and marigolds.

This year here at Saint Peter Claver we are going to be invited to bring a small picture of loved ones who have died to place on tables in the church that will stay up for most of November as we keep them in our prayers. 

At yesterday’s Trunk or Treat, the back of Alondra’s car was decorated as a beautiful ofrenda, and she was beautifully dressed to welcome the spirits of her loved ones who have died.

A couple of the little kids who came trunk-or-treating were dressed like her too.

As we head to the weekend’s festivities this week, let’s keep our saints and our loved ones who have died in our thoughts.

Let them remind us to live each day, shining the light of Christ through our lives!

El Día de Todos los Santos es este sábado y el Día de los Fieles Difuntos es este domingo.

¿Y qué es el viernes?

¡Halloween!

La palabra Halloween es una combinación de dos palabras, "hallow" que significa "santo" o "persona santa" y "een", qué significa noche.

Entonces, Halloween es la víspera del día sagrado del Día de Todos los Santos.

Mientras nos divertimos tallando calabazas y usando disfraces, veamos si podemos hacer conexiones con el día sagrado que se avecina.

Los santos son nuestros héroes católicos. Tienen historias de vida increíbles que pueden inspirarnos a querer ser como ellos.

Las calabazas están llenas de cosas pegajosas que sacamos, algo así como la forma en que Jesús "saca" las "cosas pegajosas" en nosotros llamadas pecado.

Tallamos nuestras calabazas ¿para luego qué? Poner una vela para que brille la luz. Nuestros santos hicieron brillar la luz de Cristo en sus vidas. Tratamos de hacer lo mismo.

Las almas de los justos están en las manos de Dios, y ningún tormento las tocará. Sabiduría 3:1

El Día de los Muertos se celebra en ambos días, e incluso semanas en noviembre, mientras recordamos a nuestros seres queridos que han muerto.

Algunas tradiciones del Día de los Muertos son crear un altar llamado ofrenda que incluye imágenes de seres queridos que han muerto, comidas y bebidas que les gustaron, velas y cempasúchil. 

Este año, aquí en Saint Peter Claver, se nos invita a traer una pequeña foto de los seres queridos que han muerto para colocarla en las mesas de la iglesia que permanecerán durante la mayor parte de noviembre mientras los mantenemos en nuestras oraciones. 

En el Trunk or Treat de ayer, la parte trasera del auto de Alondra estaba decorada como una hermosa ofrenda y estaba bellamente vestida para dar la bienvenida a los espíritus de sus seres queridos que han muerto.

Un par de niños pequeños que vinieron al Trunk or Treat también estaban vestidos como ella.

Mientras nos dirigimos a las festividades del fin de semana esta semana, mantengamos en nuestros pensamientos a nuestros santos y a nuestros seres queridos que han muerto.

¡Que ellos nos recuerden que vivamos cada día, haciendo brillar la luz de Cristo a través de nuestras vidas!
