What is Your Image of God?

I was taught that part of being a disciple, or follower of Jesus, is to keep learning and growing in my understanding of God and His Church.
So, about a year and a half ago I decided to sign up for the National Certification in Catechesis Program.
I had monthly Zoom classes, books to read and papers to write.
It was challenging to stay on top of it all, but what blessings it brought.
I was reminded of great things about our God.
The year of classes ended this past Saturday with one last long Zoom gathering.
At one point we were asked what our current image of God is.
If someone asked you to describe who you pray to, how would you do that?
Great questions!
My answer is my favorite image of God is the sun.
It is always there, shining its light.
At night I can see the sun’s light reflected in the moon.
On cloudy days, what light we do have I know is from the sun, even if I can’t see it. These are the qualities of a loving friend.
And my answer to who do I pray to is Jesus.
For as long as I can remember I have loved Jesus.
He is my best friend, by guide, and my biggest support.
His love transforms me, brings me joy and peace.
Then the instructor said to see how we reflect our image of God.
Wait, what?!
How do I reflect my image of God?!
Well… people tell me I am a loyal friend. I am always there to help.
I listen well and offer good advice. I’m told I am calm and peaceful.
Friends tell me that they always feel better after spending time with me.
Interesting.
The LORD said to me: You are my servant, Israel, through whom I show my glory. Isaiah 49:3
That is the first verse of this coming Sunday’s First Mass Reading.
I think this Scripture verse came to life for me through my last class on Saturday.
The Lord said to me, through what I learned about seeing myself in my image of God, Laura, you are my servant through whom I show my glory.
Wow.
I’ve never learned before that we can see ourselves in our image of God.
That is how we bring glory to God.
Ask yourself, what is your image of God? Who do you pray to? In what ways do you reflect your image of God?
God shows His Glory through you!
