Lent Guidelines

Lenten guidelines for Catholics involve prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, focusing on spiritual preparation for Easter, with specific rules: Abstinence from meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and all Fridays in Lent (for those 14+); Fasting (one full meal, two smaller ones) on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday (ages 18-59); and encouraged Almsgiving, prayer (Stations of the Cross, Scripture), and self-denial to foster inner conversion, not just outward show.

Some Recommended Prayers

  • Fasting Days: Occurs only on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and all Fridays during Lent
  • Rules: You may eat one full meal and two smaller meals that together do not equal a full meal.
  • Snacking: No solid food is permitted between meals.
  • Liquids: Water, coffee, tea, and fruit juices are allowed at any time.
  • Age: Obligatory for those aged 18 to 59 in good health.

Spiritual Purpose
Almsgiving is meant to cultivate a spirit of generosity, breaking down selfishness and fostering solidarity with the poor.

  • Charitable Donations: Supporting local food pantries, St. Vincent de Paul societies, or other organizations assisting the marginalized.
  • Acts of Service: Volunteering at shelters, visiting the sick, or performing random acts of kindness, such as offering time to help a neighbor.
