My Dear Parishioners,
We give thanks to God for His blessings upon us on the occasion of our Country’s Independence Day celebration July 4th. We are
grateful for the freedom and liberty that we enjoy in this our country. Saddened by the on-going unrest that is still happening around the country, we ask the Lord of goodness to move the hearts of those who are influenced by anger to calm down and learn how to protest in a peaceful manner. COVID-19 is still around us and the current state of affairs tells us that the numbers of positive cases are still rising. The uncertainty of our situation may cause a lot of people stress and bring in fear. Maybe this is a good time to reflect on how we can use this pandemic as an opportunity to deepen our faith and trust in the Lord. In fact this can be a great opportunity to enter into some kind of contemplation on how to grow in our holiness or Christian perfection.
So the following reflection is taken from the treatise on Christian Perfection by one of the Fathers of the Church, Saint Gregory of Nyssa, bishop (PG 46, 283-286).
Christ should be manifest in our whole life.
The life of the Christian has three distinguishing aspects: deeds, words and thought. Thought comes first, then words, since our words express openly the interior conclusions of the mind. Finally, after thoughts and words, comes action, for our deeds carry out what the mind has conceived. So when one of these results in our acting or speaking or thinking, we must make sure that all our thoughts, words and deeds are controlled by the divine ideal, the revelation of Christ. For then our thoughts, words and deeds will not fall short of the nobility of their implications.
What then must we do, we who have been found worthy of the name of Christ? Each of us must examine his thoughts, words and deeds, to see whether they are directed toward Christ or are turned away from Him. This examination is carried out in various ways. Our deeds or our thoughts or our words are not in harmony with Christ if they issue from passion. They then bear the mark of the enemy who smears the pearl of the heart with the slime of passion, dimming and even destroying the luster of the precious stone.
On the other hand, if they are free from and untainted by every passionate inclination, they are directed toward Christ, the author and source of peace. He is like a pure, untainted stream. If you draw from Him the thoughts in your mind and the inclinations of your heart, you will show a likeness to Christ, your source and origin, as the gleaming water in a jar resembles the flowing water from which it was obtained.
For the purity of Christ and the purity that is manifest in our hearts are identical. Christ’s purity, however, is the fountainhead; ours has its source in Him and flows out of Him. Our life is stamped with the beauty of His thought. The inner and the outer man are harmonized in a kind of music. The mind of Christ is the controlling influence that inspires us to moderation and goodness in our behavior. As I see it, Christian perfection consists in this: sharing the titles which express the meaning of Christ’s name, we bring out this meaning in our minds, our prayers and our way of life.
Let us pray for one another and encourage each other to grow towards our Christian perfection!

Le damos gracias a Dios por su bendición en la ocasión del Dia de Independencia de nuestro país el 4 de julio. Estamos agradecidos por la libertad de la que gozamos in este nuestro país. Entristecido por los disturbios que están sucediendo en el país, le pedimos al Señor de Bondad que mueva los corazones de aquellos que son influenciados por el enojo a calmarse y aprender a protestar de manera pacífica.
COVID-19 todavía nos rodea y la situación actual de los asuntos del estado nos dice que los números de casos positivos siguen en aumento. La incertidumbre de nuestra situación puede causar mucha ansiedad y temor a las personas. Y tal vez este es un buen momento para reflexionar como podemos usar esta pandemia como una oportunidad para fortalecer nuestra fe y confiar en el Señor. De hecho, esta puede ser una gran oportunidad de entrar en contemplación de como crecer en nuestra santidad o nuestra perfección cristiana.
Entonces, la siguiente reflexión es tomado del tratado de Perfección Cristiana de unos de los fundadores de la Iglesia, San Gregorio de Nyssa, Obispo (PG 46, 283-286).
Cristo debe manifestarse en toda nuestra vida
La vida de un cristiano tiene tres aspectos distinguidos: hechos, palabras y pensamiento. Pensamiento viene primero, después palabras, porque nuestras palabras pueden expresar abiertamente las conclusiones internas de nuestra mente. Finalmente, después de pensamientos y palabras, viene acción, ya que nuestras acciones llevan acabo lo que la mente a concebido. Entonces cuando uno de estos resulta en nuestro actuar, hablar o pensar, nosotros debemos asegurarnos de que todos nuestros pensamientos, palabras y acciones son controladas por la ideal divina, la revelación de Cristo. Pues entonces nuestros pensamientos, palabras, y acciones no les faltara la nobleza de su intención.
¿Qué entonces debemos hacer, nosotros quienes hemos sido encontrados dignos del nombre Cristo? Cada uno de nosotros debemos examinar nuestros pensamientos, palabras, y hechos, para ver si están dirigidas a Cristo o si nos dirigen alejarnos de Él. Esta examinacion se puede hacer de varias maneras. Nuestros hechos o pensamientos o nuestras palabras no están en armonía con Cristo si salen de pasión. Entonces tiene la marca del enemigo que mancha la perla del corazón con la suciedad de la pasión, opacando y hasta llegar a destruir el brillo de la piedra preciosa.
Sin embargo, si están libres y sin la mancha de cualquier inclinación de pasión, ellas son dirigidas hacia Cristo, el autor y fuente de paz. El es como una corriente pura y sin mancha. Si usted saca de El los pensamientos de su mente y las inclinaciones de su corazón, usted va demostrar un semejanza a Cristo, su fuente y origen, como el agua en un frasco semeja la corriente de donde se obtuvo.
Pues la pureza de Cristo y la pureza que es manifestada en nuestros corazones es idéntica. La pureza de Cristo, sin embargo, es la fuente principal; Él es nuestra fuente y fluye de Él. Nuestra vida esta sellada con la belleza del pensamiento de Él. Lo interno y externo del hombre son como música en armonía. La mente de Cristo es la influencia controladora que nos inspira a moderación y la bondad den nuestro comportamiento. Como yo lo veo, perfección cristiana consiste de esto: compartiendo los títulos que, expresando el significado del nombre de Cristo, nosotros formulamos este significado en nuestras mentes, nuestras oraciones y en nuestro estilo de vida.
¡Hay que orar el uno por el otro y fomentarnos el uno al otra a crecer en nuestra perfección cristiana!
